Rockford Community Celebrates 15 Years of Mitchell’s Run
On August 17th, the Rockford community will rally for it’s 15th year of Mitchell’s Run thru Rockford. The 5k race began in August 1999 in an effort to raise money for the Parent Project MD, a non-profit organization searching for a cure to Duchenne muscular dystrophy. Duchenne MD is a genetic disorder that causes a loss of strength due to an absence of dystrophin, a muscle-binding protein.
Mitchell Peterson, now 17, was diagnosed with Duchenne muscular dystrophy in March of 1999, and he and his family, along with plenty of friends and volunteers, put on the 5k race through downtown Rockford. The event includes three different kids’ races for ages 2-10 and the full 5k. The community also holds an annual volleyball tournament for Mitchell and Parent Project MD, appropriately named Volley 4 Mitchell.
