Thankful for Hope – In the rape capital of the world

Denver, CO: There is actually a region in the world known as “the worst place on earth to be a woman.” It’s in the Democratic Republic of Congo, which has been described by the United Nations as the rape capital of the world. Over one million women and girls have been raped and assaulted since 1998. HEAL Africa is an organization that is providing safe houses which give medical care, psychological support, education, and employment opportunities to the assaulted women.

In Denver, Cori Deterding and Rose Muniz have founded an organization called Hope Connects. They’re partnering with local organizations in developing countries and implementing projects that meet basic needs as well as empower individuals, families, and communities. Right now they are working with HEAL Africa on a project that will do the following in the DRC:

*Give 100 women a place to stay at a newly renovated Safe House
*Give 60 women medical and psychological care
*Help train 2 counselors directly, along with an additional 200 in surrounding areas
*Give 30 women micro-credit loans allowing them to use profits to support their families

The total amount needed for this project is $5,000. What makes Hope Connects different than other non-profit organizations is the way contributors are kept engaged after giving with quarterly reports. Each charitable donor also gets a final report which reflects the actual impact and outcome of their investment.

Moving forward Hope Connects plans to initiate additional projects in the DRC which focus on education, health, and community advancement. This strategic development model will then be replicated in other developing countries around the world.

On a day when the country counts its blessings, Elemental thanks Cori Deterding for sharing her story, her time, and her talent.
